The rare earths elements: La–Lu, Y and Sc are irreplaceable components of compact
uorescent light bulbs, wind turbines generators, and hybrid and electric vehicles.
For application, the rare earths must be separated into pure compoundsfrom their
composite ores. China currently produces ~97% of all rare earths materials, though its
geological holdings amount to ~37% of the estimated total global supply. The global
market for rare earth elements is currently in crisisdue to a reduction of export quotas
by the Chinese government. The talk will encompass the many applications of rare
earths in modern society, the current global supply chain and outlook for this critical
class of elements.w ww.lrsm.upenn.edu

Caroline Earle White, an important early advocate for animals in America, in 1910 celebrated the installation of the water fountain in Queen Village, Philadelphia, located at the intersection of Bainbridge and 3rd Streets. She is pictured here in black, standing to the right of the fountain. The fountain reads “Drink Gentle Friends” across the top: it was established to quench the thirst of horses and people, too. Building these fountains was only one of many campaigns led by Ms. White after the Civil War.

Kindness towards animals was not an automatic human response. The movement towards kindness in America substantially began in the gilded age of the 19th century and was first directed towards livestock . . . pets came later. Horses, in fact, were a substantial part of anti-cruelty actions: 70% of all cruelty cases from 1870-1890 were horse related. (5)

Caroline Earle White connected with and was inspired by others who were just starting to advocate for animals. In 1866 after vacationing in the Adirondacks she visited the biggest name in animal activism of the time, humanitarian Henry Bergh of New York City. Interested in animal advocacy, not necessarily in animal shelters, he founded the American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, the ASPCA, in the same year of her visit. Another important early animal activist was George Angell, who founded the Massachusetts SPCA in Boston in 1868. Historian Bernard Unti calls Bergh, White, and Angell the “founding triumvirate” of the 19th Century American animal-protection movement. (5)

Ms. White returned to Philadelphia and partnered with Colonial and Ms. M. Richards Mucké, obtaining patronage of the city’s most prominent individuals and calling for the creation of a Philadelphia chapter of the SPCA. With the assistance of her attorney husband Richard White, the group’s charter and corresponding laws were drafted and on June 21, 1868 the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) was founded. Per Diane Beers, “Although Caroline Earle White played a key role in the creation of the PSPCA in 1868, as a woman, she was not permitted to serve as one of its leaders or board members.” (7) Her husband served on the board of managers and most likely spoke for her. This organization continues as the PSPCA today in Philadelphia.

One year later in 1869 Caroline Earle White started the Women’s branch of the PSPCA where she would lead as president until her death in 1916 at the age of 83. The WSPCA is credited with the establishment of horse watering stations similar to the one in Queen Village throughout the City of Philadelphia. She quickly convinced the mayor to develop more humane methods to euthanize stray dogs and by the end of the first year she had a shelter in operation and had taken over the city’s pound, including animal collection and disposal processes. From this, she garnered control over the release of strays used in medical research. This was America’s first animal shelter.

The city contributed $2,500 toward the costs to operate the shelter. This constituted the “first attempt on the part of any society in the U.S. to handle the problem of surplus or unwanted animals, as far as it can be ascertained the first appropriation ever made by a municipality for humane work” ( Coleman, 1924, 181; see also Brestrup 1997).(4)

Photo of Caroline Earle White provided by the Women's Humane Society.

The Women’s Philadelphia SPCA developed a charter “To provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty throughout the state of Pennsylvania, and of the enforcement of laws heretofore or hereafter enacted for the protection of dumb animals; to erect and maintain fountains, tanks etc., for dumb creatures and to distribute tracts.” A shelter was established at 315 Chadwick Street where sick and injured horses and other small animals were treated free of charge, called the “Caroline Earle White Dispensary.” The WSPCA continues today as the Woman’s Humane Society, now located in Bensalem, PA after losing their Philadelphia headquarters. Animal advocacy was often supported by women in the 19th century, but not the leadership because of typical gender expectations. Ms. White was the exception.

The impact of her work was felt world-wide and by animals other than horses and pets. Ms. White traveled extensively and in 1880 attended the Brussels Congress of “Société Protectrice des Animaux”, established in 1849. There, she shared her efforts in Philadelphia to establish shelters. Her articles were translated into both German and French, impacting communities around the world. She also campaigned vigorously against the use of bird plumage in woman’s attire. Per medical historian Susan Lederer, “In 1907 she was instrumental in obtaining a congressional investigation of railroad animal transportation, which resulted in a federal law compelling companies to feed and water animals in their care at least once every 28 hours. She often characterized this law as the “crowning achievement” of her life.” (2)

She also believed in early intervention to promote better treatment of animals. She worked with public, private and parochial schools, including Girard College and the House of Refuge, to educate children on kindness and consideration for animals through the “Bands of Mercy” program that was becoming popular around the world. By 1912 this movement reached “85,098 (organizations) into which have gathered something more than three million children.”(6)

Ms. White met British antivivisectionist and feminist Francis Power Cobb on a trip to England. In 1883 she was a driving force behind the establishment of the American Antivivisection Society. According to Susan Lederer, “although membership in the society remained small compared to the much larger animal protection organizations, it commanded attention through the publication of Journal of Zoophily, edited by White and published under the joint auspices of the PSPCA and the American Antivivisection Society. Perhaps more significant, Caroline White’s assistant editor, Mary Frances Lovell, also served as the superintendent for the Department of Mercy for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, the largest women’s group in the United States, which effectively spread the gospel of antivivisection to women’s clubs throughout the nation.” (1)

The American Humane Association started in 1877, a federation of societies for united action to secure national legislation against cruelty to animals as well as children. At the first joint meeting in Ohio, Ms. White was there representing the Woman’s SPCA. By 1922 there were 539 societies registered with the organization.

We’ve come a long way in 150 years from the horrors once accepted as part of normal daily life. But kindness to animals continues to be a significant challenge today in modern society, particularly with the explosion of the pet population, driving euthanasia of far, far too many healthy, trusting animals for lack of available homes. Solutions continue to elude us. It’s estimated that across American each year literally millions of animals never leave the shelters in to which they enter. A more unified advocacy voice and initiation of organizations such as the “National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy” (1993) are more likely to lead to permanent and effective solutions to this complex problem. Henry Salt (1851-1939) said that “we must recognize the common bond of humanity that unites all living beings in one universal brotherhood.”(5) That recognition, along with strong leaders like Caroline Earle White, will help us find the answer.

Note: The Historical Society of Pennsylvania is looking for contributors towards the processing and conservation of the WSPCA’s records; it has been partially “adopted” at this time but still needs $1,225 as of 2/2012. Consider a gift today. [Click here]

Timeline

1821 – Maine engages first anti-cruelty law; a dozen states have similarly followed by 1860. But cruelty of domestic animals resulted in only small fines or a few days in jail.

1822 - England gets national anti-cruelty legislation and the SPCA – first in the world. In 1840 name was changed to the Royal SPCA.

1866 - ASPCA starts in NYC and continues to serve animals today along with a strong national anti-cruelty mission. The PSPCA follows in PA in 1867, then MASPCA in MA in 1868.

1869 - Women’s branch of PSPCA is started in Philadelphia, later separates from the PSPCA, called the Women’s PSPCA in 1897. Today is known as the Woman’s Humane Society.

1874 - Morris Refuge for Homeless and Suffering Animals opens in Philadelphia in 1874, the first cat shelter in the U.S., by Elizabeth Morris with financial help by the Women’s branch of PSPCA.(6) It continues to operate today at 1242 Lombard Street.

1870 - Controversy erupts when a prominent physician requests all strays from the new shelter in Philadelphia. Congress passes the first national animal-protection law, protecting farm animals.

1877 - American Humane Association is founded to have one unified voice in the humane movement when 27 humane organizations from 10 states meet in Cleveland, Ohio. A national federation of societies, the oldest organization dedicated to ending abuse and neglect for both children & animals.

1883 - The American Anti-Vivisection Society began in Philadelphia, the first of its kind in the United States.

1889 - Ryerss’s Infirmary opens in Philadelphia area as the nation’s first retirement and infirmary for workhorses. It continues to exist today as Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines.

1907 – Women’s Philadelphia SPCA works to ensure compliance to new laws to treat cattle in transit.

1954 - Humane Society of the U.S. starts in Washington, D.C. and is America’s largest animal protection organization, working with legislation, industry reform, and more, it is a mainstream force against cruelty and supplements local efforts today.

The Philadelphia Water Department is looking for an eco-friendly dog in Queen Village to help keep Philly’s waterways clean. In the Philly Water’s Best Friend spokesdog competition, spokesdogs will be chosen to teach bark-park buddies and their caretakers about the importance of picking up pet waste. Fifteen finalists from Queen Village will be chosen by virtue of online voting. A winner will then be chosen in June by a panel judging pageants in the neighborhood.

Each spokesdog will win $200 worth of prizes from a pet shop in their neighborhood. As a part of the campaign, the winning dogs’ images will be used on a number of brochures, advertisements, websites, etc. Winning spokesdogs and their owners will be required to attend at least three community events to distribute information on living the eco-friendly dog life.

JoAnne Dahme, general manager of public affairs at the Philadelphia Water Department states, ” Our goal is to work creatively with riverside communities to reduce this pollution, which results in tainted stormwater runoff flowing into our rivers and streams, by using common sense solutions like picking up after your pet.”

The deadline to reister your dog is Feb. 15. For a complete description, along with contest guidelines and registering your dog, go to:

The QVNA Sustainability Committee recently received a grant both to create a prototype dog waste composting station and to educate residents about preventing water pollution. As reported in the September 2011 Crier, one goal is to inform neighbors about dog waste as a potential water pollutant. As part of the grant requirements, the committee is gathering information and would like to get neighbors’ (both dog owners and non-owners’) opinions.

The committee encourages anyone to take the survey, following this link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3CR7XS5

When you complete the survey (takes less than 2 minutes), if you include your contact information, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift certificate from Essene Market.

The Committee is also partnering with the Philadelphia Water Department in its neighborhood “Spokesdog” contest. Some lucky neighborhood dog will be elected to serve as a canine environmental steward helping promote a dog waste-free neigbhorhood. More on that to come. In the meantime, thank you for participating in the survey.

MAYOR NUTTER ANNOUNCES CARTON RECYCLING

Mayor Michael A. Nutter, the Philadelphia Streets Department and the Carton Council announced today that food and beverage cartons are now recyclable as a part of the City’s residential curbside recycling program. With this new service, nearly all household containers used by residents are now recyclable.

The City is bringing carton recycling to its residents in a public private partnership with the Carton Council, a group of carton manufacturers united to deliver long term collaborative solutions in order to divert valuable cartons from the landfill. Philadelphia’s recycling diversion rate, the amount of materials diverted from the waste stream, currently stands at nearly 20 percent, reaching rates of more than 25 percent in some neighborhoods of the city.

“Philadelphia is committed to becoming the greenest city in America, and our recycling program is a leading component in this effort,” said Mayor Nutter. “We are proud to partner with the Carton Council to bring recycling innovation to our residents. This collaboration shows what can happen when government and companies work to create successful public-private partnerships. I am proud to be the mayor of a city with individuals and organizations that are dedicated to creating clean and green neighborhoods.”

Beginning immediately, residential households can place all empty, clean and dry food and beverage cartons in their recycling bins. Commonly used carton containers include milk and juice cartons, along with soup and broth, soy milk, eggnog and wine cartons.

The addition of cartons to the curbside recycling program will enable residents to earn more Philadelphia Recycling Rewards points and properly dispose of commonly used holiday materials.

“Adding cartons to your recycling bin is a great way to earn more Recycling Rewards points, which can be redeemed during the holiday season to purchase gifts for your friends and family,” said Streets Commissioner Clarena I. W. Tolson. “Also during this time of year, people are increasingly using carton materials- such as eggnog, broth and wine cartons- for their festive recipes and gatherings. Now is the perfect time to introduce this to the city so we can allow residents to fully take advantage of all of the benefits that this program has.”
The Carton Council’s collaboration with the City of Philadelphia serves as a model for how other cities can promote and implement carton recycling in their communities. The Carton Council acted as a facilitator to help the City achieve its goal to add carton recycling to its curbside programs. A key step was working with the City’s recycling processors to ensure cartons would be marketable as a recyclable commodity before they would be added to the City’s program. The Carton Council provided technical and financial support for equipment upgrades for processing the cartons. The Carton Council is also supporting City staff as they raise awareness and disseminate information on carton recycling to local residents that use the City’s recycling services.

“Carton recycling is a win for Philadelphia’s residents and the environment,” said Derric Brown, Director of Sustainability for Evergreen Packaging, a Carton Council member. “We are committed to working with more cities to take the important step of expanding their recycling programs to keep cartons out of the landfills and into the recycling bin.”

The members of the Carton Council are Elopak, Evergreen Packaging, SIG/SIG Combibloc and Tetra Pak. They are working with local government officials, recycling facilities, paper mills and communities across the United States to build a robust system to recycle liquid food and beverage carton packages.

Below is a brief sketch of the life of William Spafford (sometimes also spelled “Spofford”). William and his wife Rebecca were the first occupants of the large house still standing on the northwest corner of Front and Bainbridge Street.

William Spafford was born in the last years of the 17th century and died in 1768. He married Rebecca Ellis at the First Presbyterian Church in 1719. Tragically, their son William Jr. died seven years later, and their son Thomas died in 1730.

Early in life, Spafford became a sea captain, ship owner, and merchant. Newspaper ads of the time show that in 1720 he was master of the sloop William, which he sailed to Antigua. During the next few years, he captained the sloop Sarah, which he owned, also in the West Indies trade. In 1726, he registered the 30-ton sloop Keith. William Spafford continued his sea voyages throughout the next decade, sailing the Three Bachellors to Barbados in the early 1730s, the Charming Sally to Ireland in 1736, and the brig Mary to Lisbon in 1738.

Capt. Spafford sold a variety of imported products at his store, which was located on the ground floor of his dwelling house at the corner of Front and Market. Slaves were included among his merchandise. For example, in August 1731 he advertised the sale of “a very likely Negroe woman … fit for housework or plantation work,” along with a cargo of good green tea. In 1734, he was selling a “young Negro man” and a “very likely Negro boy.” In July 1741, he had a “Negro Man” and “Negro Girl,” along with a lot of West India rum and Moscovado sugar. And in Sept. 1743 he advertised a “Negro Woman who can Wash, Iron, Scour, etc. and Cooks very well.”

Around that time, Spafford was making the transition from sea captain to the business of providing ropes and other equipment to ships. Capt. Spafford’s ropewalk was located on the Passyunk Road, near the corner of Oak Street (now Bainbridge). He took on a young man, Timothy Scannel, as an assistant in the rope-making business. Scannel had just arrived in Philadelphia on a ship, and was assigned as an indentured servant to “William Spafford, mariner.” Unfortunately, in July 1748, Scannel ran away. Spafford offered a reward for his capture and described Scannel as “of a thick short stature, full face, wears his own short black hair, very talkative, and speaks very fast … by trade a rope maker.”

Spafford advertised that he sold “ship chandlery, with cables and cordage of all kinds” at a store on Samuel Powell’s wharf. In December 1755, he moved his store to another wharf further south, which was “late of Messieures [Emmanuel?] Josiah and Carpenter.” The economic risks of the chandlery trade became clear in November 1760, when Spafford and other chandlers, a sailmaker, and a ship builder placed a notice in the newspapers asking for the apprehension of one John White. They reported that White had ordered a brigantine, called the Ranger, built, fitted out, and filled with cargo. Then, together with his wife, he sailed away to an unknown port, without paying any of the people who had built and provisioned the ship.

Although Spafford sold people into bondage, he apparently saw no conflict between that endeavor and helping to support the church. Thus, in 1753, he was listed as a manager of the lottery to raise money to build a steeple onto the Second Presbyterian Church in Arch Street. Another lottery manager was George Spafford, also a sea captain and merchant; he and John Spafford (another sea captain) were probably William’s brothers. The completed steeple was almost has high as that of Christ Church, but George Spafford never got to see it since he died in 1754.

In 1755, it was mentioned in a newspaper ad that William Spafford was living in Society Hill. Ten years earlier, he had purchased a lot of ground nearby (“on the hill”) at the corner of Front and Shippen (now Bainbridge) Streets. According to an insurance report, Spafford’s elegant townhouse was constructed there by 1762.

Finally, a newspaper notice of June 2, 1768, indicated that the Passyunk Road property of William Spafford, deceased, was to be auctioned off by the sheriff. The property tax roles of 1769 list a Widow Spafford as living in Southwark, with one servant and one cow. Possibly Rebecca Spafford still resided in the grand townhouse at Front and Shippen Streets. Currently, the house — built with profits gained from the slave trade — lies abandoned and stripped of its finery. It is for sale to someone who will restore it.

Every Thursday evening, join your neighbors for Tai Chi classes in the Weccacoe Playground Building. Tai Chi, often referred to as “meditation in motion,” promotes serenity through gentle movements which connects the mind and body. This form of martial arts was originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, but has evolved into a graceful form of exercise used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. All levels welcome.

Do you live in a historic home in Queen Village? If so, we welcome you to participate in our new window pane project. The purpose of this project is to increase awareness about the history of our neighborhood by showcasing the Georgian, Federal, Colonial, Greek Revival and Victorian Eclectic architectural periods that are represented in Queen Village.

The window panes are designed to include the following information:

Year Built

Name of Builder

Builder’s Occupation

Architectural Style (optional)

Insurance Details (optional)

If you would like us to print a window pane for your home, please write to history@qvna.org and include the information listed above along with your name and address. We will be happy to print these details on a transparency for you and drop it in your mailbox. We merely request that you hang the window pane on a first floor, street-facing window so that it is visible to passersby.

If you do not happen to have the information needed for the sign but are interested in learning about the history of your home, be sure to contact us at history@qvna.org. We will be happy to provide you with tips and resources for conducting historical research.

Fallen leaves shouldn’t go to waste or be left to litter our streets.

Let’s work together to make this Fall Leaf Drive another victory for recycling and our UnLitter Us campaign. For questions visit click here or call 311.

Collection Guidelines:

Use only brown paper leaf bags, available at most hardware or home improvement stores

Set leaf bags out next to trash and recyclables on your regular trash day

Leaves in plastic bags will be collected as trash, not recycling

Do not mix trash or other recyclables with leaves

Use as many bags as needed, max. 40 lbs. each

Mechanical leaf collection will NOT be available

Theater in America owes a debt to William Plumsted (1708-1765), an early patron of the arts in the City. He owned a large brick warehouse built in 1749 on Water Street between Pine and Lombard Streets. The house, demolished in 1849, extended through to Front Street.

A lapsed Quaker, Plumsted enjoyed the performing arts that were restricted or banned in the City. He was a founder of the first dance company and opened his warehouse to dramatic performances. On April 25, 1754, the British company of Lewis Hallam staged two plays there. The house was packed until the season ended on June 24.

The first structure in the Colonies built specifically as a playhouse was the Society Hill Theater, erected in 1759 by David Douglass, who married Hallam’s widow, on the southwest corner of South and Hancock Streets. It opened on June 15 and closed December 28 that year.

Douglass then built the grander Southwark Theater in 1766 at South and Leithgow Streets, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. It measured 50 feet on South and 90 on Leithgow, nearly to Bainbridge Street. Its first floor was made of brick, which supported the wood upper floors and cupola on the roof. The building leaked, the view to the stage was blocked by supporting columns, its brickwork and wood portions were rough, and its exterior was painted a glaring red. Yet President George Washington was a frequent visitor. The Apollo Theater was built next to the Southwark Theater by Webster, Cross & Partners. It opened June 12, 1811, and closed July 19!

The Southwark Theater burned down on May 29, 1823, leaving only the brick first floor standing. The Taylor distillery was built on this foundation. The distillery was demolished in the early 1900s.

The Southwark Soup Society was the first charity founded to feed the “deserving poor” with hot lunches during the winter months. It also offered free coal and even considered opening a bath house.

It was established in 1805 by James Ronaldson (1768-1841), a Scot who first visited town in 1791 and returned for good in 1794. In 1796 with his partner Andrew Binney, he built the first type foundry in the States on Ninth Street between South and Bainbridge Streets. In 1806, he bought the type-founding materials and tools that Ben Franklin shipped from France in the 1780s. The firm made a fortune and he became a philanthropist and civic leader. Ronaldson also corresponded with his friend Thomas Jefferson. They shared interests in textiles, sheep farming, printing, type manufacturing, and other businesses.

In 1827, Ronaldson established the Philadelphia Cemetery for the poor on the block bounded by Ninth and Tenth Street from Bainbridge to Fitzwater Streets, which folks just called Ronaldson’s. It held 10,000 remains—and an odd one-room building fitted out with the comforts of a stove, couch, and table. People who died suddenly were kept there overnight before burial. A string was put in their hands, to ring a bell and fetch the caretaker should they just as suddenly spring back to life.

A curious idea from the man who would be the first president of the Franklin Institute.

Queen Village is a historic community along the Delaware River, about a fifteen minute walk from Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. The City’s first neighborhood, this part of Philadelphia contains many of the City’s oldest houses. 3 Bounded by the Delaware River, Lombard Street, 6th Street and Washington Ave, it comprises a significant portion of what was called “Southwark”, a community incorporated in 1762 by English settlers that originally extended from South Street down to Reed Street. The Consolidation Act of 1854 combined Southwark as well as other communities such as Northern Liberties and Kensington into the City of Philadelphia. Southwark was placed on the National Historic Register in the 1970s. Shortly thereafter it was renamed Queen Village, after Queen Christina of Sweden, to recognize the Swedish role in promoting the original settlements.

1600 – 1870

Originally the home of the Lenape Indians, it was called Wicaco, meaning “Pleasant Place.” A large area called “New Sweden” developed during the 1600s, with colonies established in the state of Delaware and along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. In 1664, the family of Sven Gunnarson obtained a patent from the Dutch governor to establish a farm at Wicaco, covering all of Southwark, Passyunk and Moymensing. In 1683, his sons sold 300 acres north of Wicaco to William Penn for the new city of Philadelphia. Old Swedes’ Church located at Christian Street and Columbus Boulevard was completed in 1700 and is a National Historic Site still in use today as an Episcopal church.

Multiple waves of immigrants settled in this area, including Irish and Jewish along with Scottish, German and Polish. During the 1700’s, there was an influx of German and Scots-Irish immigrants in Philadelphia, many of whom arrived as indentured servants or “redemptioners,” who stayed in the city to work off the cost of the passage. “The principal development of the area occurred in the late 18th century and was heavily tied to commercial activity along the Delaware River.”4 Many of the jobs listed in the city directory of 1800 includes sea captains, ship builders, mariners, pilots, seamen, sail, rope and mast makers, ship masters, and lumber merchants.5

This was an area of small hills and streams, ponds, and a marshy area called “the neck” just south of Washington Avenue. The first Navy Yard, located just south of Washington Avenue, was in use during the Revolutionary War period and deemed the official United States Navy Yard in 1801, active until moved further south in the late 1800’s. Another likely first, Spark’s Shot Tower at Front and Carpenter Sts., opened in 1808 to produce lead hunting shot and stands as an icon of the community today. This tower is considered an example of fine Philadelphia brick work, and was used as a model to build early light houses along the eastern seaboard because of its ability to withstand gale force winds. 6

The Irish potato famine of the 1840’s and wars in central Europe during the nineteenth century drove more people to seek sanctuary in America. The City of Philadelphia was a mercantile city of about 30,000 during the Revolutionary War but grew in to a leading industrial metropolis of over 400,000 people by 1850. As a result of the immigrant wave of the previous decade, in 1850 three out of ten Philadelphians were foreign-born, the highest proportion ever recorded. 2

In the absence of significant public transportation, most Philadelphians lived near their jobs, and the immigrants were thus spread around the city far more than later groups would be. The Irish were initially much poorer than the Germans as a group. In 1850, nearly half of them worked in day labor, carting or handloom weaving, and less than a third of them in skilled trades.5 The construction laborers, especially, lived in alleys and side streets all over Philadelphia although there were some Irish concentrations in Southwark, Moyamensing, and Grays’ Ferry along the southern borders of the city. Many of the immigrants worked in the nearby sweatshops or in the markets. Markets were located in the shambles (Headhouse Square) along S. 2nd Street, the Washington Market along Bainbridge Street from 3rd to 5th Streets and in the 4th Street pushcart market.

1870 – 1920

By the 1870’s, Philadelphia had grown by another 350,000, to about 750,000. From the 1870’s through the 1920’s the waterfront was a bustling place. This area was full of wharves, warehouses, sugar refineries, freight depots, and grain elevators. In 1873 a two story station for receiving immigrants opened at the foot of Washington Avenue, started by the modern steamship company the American Line with support of the Pennsylvania Railroad. A fifty-year period of active immigration in Philadelphia began during which roughly one million immigrants arrived and Philadelphia was the fourth largest immigrant port in the county.

The great migration of the Jewish immigrants occurred from 1880 to 1914, many settling in Philadelphia. Some were escaping the horrors of the violent anti-Jewish riots in Russia, others were seeking to fulfill dreams of religious freedom and economic prosperity.1 Many settled around the wharves in this area.

The building was torn down in 1915 and from that point on people were processed on board ships.

1920 – Present

“After World War II, the neighborhood began a long and steady decline as the children of immigrants left south Philadelphia for other parts of the city and nearby suburbs. For the first time in the area’s 300 year history the population actually began to shrink after 1950.”4 Urban renewal became the focus of the nation. In Queen Village hundreds of 18th and 19th century homes were destroyed and families were displaced in the 1950’s to allow the construction of I-95, which separated the community from the river. A cross-town expressway along South Street to connect I-76 to I-95 was proposed by city planners as well, and property values in the area plummeted. While I-95 could not be stopped even though furiously debated, the expressway was defeated. But during this period, artists enjoyed the low rents and bohemian atmosphere of the area around South Street. Today a somewhat eclectic atmosphere remains in Queen Village, with its diversity of population and architecture.

In 1992 a “business improvement district” called the South Street Headhouse District was established in northern Queen Village, eastern Bella Vista and southern Society Hill. This district effectively established a new government entity to provided supplemental services. It is run by a separate board of directors to support the specific needs of the area and is allowed to assess taxes to fund improvements or special programs. It also may identify grants to assist the specific area.

Queen Village showcases over three centuries of American history and architecture, and every block has a story to tell. With its diverse architectural style, Queen Village is distinct from the carefully restored colonial character of Society Hill located just to the north. “Charming 18th century homes, fancy 19th century Victorians, distinctive 20th century bay window facades and a sleek 21st architecture are evident in the new urban streetscape.”4 While the future looks bright, Queen Village has challenges ahead, including redevelopment pressures from those looking to profit from this desirable location without concern for the destruction of historic places or who may negatively impact the aesthetic and “walkability” of the community. “The dedicated volunteers of the Queen Village Neighbors Association work tirelessly to address these and many other urban problems. Philadelphia’s first neighborhood offers us a glimpse into our history’s rich past and provides a vision for a promising future.”4

About 850 Queen Village homes are on the PHC Register. Of these, about 800 still stand, many of them clustered on the streets closest to I-95. No doubt, there are just as many equally significant homes throughout Southwark that didn’t make the cut.

The Guide to Historic Buildings is a resource for residents and visitors interested in buildings that date back to before the Revolution. It presents the characteristic architectural styles in the neighborhood—Trinity and Bandbox houses, both wood frame and brick, Tenement (rental) houses, and London-style “double” Trinities. Exterior and interior details are illustrated by photos, drawings, and artwork.

As I walking around the neighborhood this weekend, I noticed that Queen Village is home to many pieces of public artwork. Very specifically, there are a number of sculptures and statues that are installed in front of buildings, parks and other public places. While I had seen these pieces before, I hadn’t quite appreciated the variety of these works until I photographed them. There are pieces made of stone, metal, and glass and some are free-standing while others are attached to walls or are even site-specific. I only had time to photograph a few of these works; there are many more to be seen in Queen Village. Four of these photographs are featured on the header of this website.

In 1763, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon marked the southern border of Pennsylvania at what was believed to be the southernmost point of Philadelphia, outside of a house that no longer exists at 30 South Street. This was in an effort to identify the exact location of Philadelphia so they could then base all future measurements off that point of reference. This home was owned by Joseph Huddle, however records were not found identifying him as such. In 2010 the confirmation of this address and owner was made thanks to the initiative of resident Janie Black who won a grant enabling students from Penn State-Abington to unearth the deed. These students performed a lot of difficult, often tedious work at city records looking through early deeds that, due to manual handwriting, can be very difficult to read. In May of 2010 a deed was found dated 1754 with Huddle’s name. Four months later, they found insurance records that confirmed the location at the corner of South and Penn Streets.

Joseph Huddle's home is believed to have looked like the building depicted in this ink drawing.

The Mason-Dixon Line is a 325 mile border through the wilderness of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. The actual survey began in 1765 in the aftermath of the French and Indian War, still a brutal time when Mason and Dixon risked their lives through rough terrain and with their prized equipment for almost four years.

This survey was the result of a property dispute between the Penn Family, which owned Pennsylvania and Delaware, and the Calvert family, which controlled Maryland. These families hired Mason and Dixon to perform this survey after a complicated 80 year battle. G. Terry Madonna, Franklin and Marshall Scholar at the Center for Politics and Public Affairs, said the boundary “was wrongly used, throughout much of American history…to describe those state that were free and those states that held slaves.”

Stone markers exist to mark the Mason Dixon Line and many are still in place over 240 years later. Thanks to an organization established in 1990 call the Mason and Dixon Line Preservation Partnership (MDLPP) to inventory these stones, over 200 have been identified. Part of MDLPP’s mission is to find ways to preserve these markers from further loss and deterioration.

Todd Babcock, who lives in Embreeville, 15 miles south of Philadelphia, has traveled the entire Mason-Dixon Line and created a documentary about if for the History Channel. He looks forward to the installation of a wayside exhibit and state historic marker to be built near 30 South St. in Philadelphia. In March 2011 Babcock and Jim Shomper, another member of the MDLPP, investigated the exact location of 30 South Street and were able to mark the approximate location on the pedestrian bridge that stands in place of 30 South Street today, just above the north-bound lanes of I-95.

All household electronics including computers, printers, microwaves, air-conditioners, metals and small appliances will be accepted. Small business owners with less than 50 employees are also encouraged to participate.
PSCA and eForce Compliance, Philadelphia’s only R2 certified e-waste recycler, are sponsoring this event. eForce is eager to bring Passyunk Square their first collection event and provide its residents with the services to properly dispose of their used electronics. Electronics are often thrown in the trash by residents because there are simply few convenient drop off locations available. eForce Compliance allows residents to get rid of their household clutter while recycling responsibly!
This event is part of the “UnLitter Us” South Philly launch being hosted by many South Philadelphia civic and neighborhood associations. All local area residents of South Philadelphia and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate in the days events, and to also bring their obsolete electronics to be responsibly recycled.

Tai Chi, often referred to as “meditation in motion,” promotes serenity through gentle movements which connects the mind and body. This form of martial arts was originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, but has evolved into a graceful form of exercise used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions.

Passyunk Square Civic Association (PSCA) will hold an Electronic Collection Event on Saturday, October 15, 2011 in the Acme parking lot at Passyunk Ave. and Reed St. The event will take place from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. and residents are encouraged to bring “anything with a plug.”
