When were Belgian blocks put on the streets?
There are different types of blocks around the city. Typically rectangular quarried stone used originally for paving roads. It is not “cobblestone”, which is not quarried but naturally occurring stone. Placed in groupings called “Setts”, the older blocks are smaller than average brick sizes. Paving using these blocks occurred in the later half of the 19th century.
