Fares, Transfers and Tokens
A single bus, trolley, or subway trip is $2.00 exact cash, payable into a farebox on the vehicle or to the agent at an MFL or BSL station. Use bills, coins (no pennies!) or a combination of coins and bills.
If you plan to transfer to a connecting route, pay an additional $1.00. You’ll be handed a paper “transfer.” Present the transfer when you board the connecting route. NOTE: You can’t use a transfer to re-board the same route.
Regional Rail train fares are by zone. Buy your ticket to the zone of your destination at the station where you board. If the station is closed, buy your ticket on the train without a surcharge. Cash only, but exact fare is not required.
Seniors ride free! If you’re 65 or older, show your Medicare card and ride free on buses, trolleys and rapid transit. Exceptions: weekdays 7-8 AM and 4:30-5:30 PM, when regular fares apply.
Seniors pay only $1.00 on Regional Rail trains ($1.50 on trains to/from stations in New Jersey or Delaware). Consult Regional Rail schedules for rush hour restrictions.
Tip: Save money! Use SEPTA tokens. A token equals one $2 cash fare. You save on each trip! When you pay your fare with a token, transfers are $1.00, as when paying a cash fare.
If you travel a lot, consider a weekly pass or a monthly pass. You never need cash, tokens or transfers. Weekly passes are for a designated Monday-Sunday. Monthly passes are by calendar month. Price varies depending on the pass. A “Transpass” is good for unlimited rides within the city limits and in the first zone beyond. On weekends and major holidays, Transpasses are good anywhere on SEPTA, city and suburb, including Regional Rail trains.
Tip: Planning a day of shopping or sightseeing? Visitors in town? Consider a DayPass, for unlimited travel on all SEPTA services except Regional Rail (one Regional Rail ride is allowed per pass). DayPasses can be purchased any time and held for future use. A pass is not activated until you use it to take your first ride. It’s good until 2 AM the next day.
