| Queen Village is one of the city's
safest neighborhoods, but it is always best be prepared and be safe.
Below are some general public safety tips, as recommended by the
City of Philadelphia's Police Department. Also, be sure to review
how to contact the police to report
incidents.
Street Safety:
Stay alert, be confident, and know your environment
At night, walk with others and avoid smaller, dark streets
Keep personal items close to your body; don't flash money or jewelry
Trust your instincts; if someone or something makes you uneasy
Call 911 if you see anything suspicious, then call the South Street
mini-station at 215-922-6706
Home/Apartment Safety:
When you move into a new house or apartment, re-key the locks.
Always keep an outside light on after sunset. Use electronic timers
or photo-sensors to ensure lights automatically turn on.
Make sure every external door has a sturdy, well-installed dead bolt
lock. Key-in-the-knob locks alone are not enough.
Sliding glass doors can offer easy access if they are not properly
secured. You can secure them by installing commercially available
locks or putting a broomstick or dowel in the inside track to jam
the door.
Lock double-hung windows with key locks or "pin" your windows by
drilling a small hole into a 45 degree angle between the inner and
outer frames, then insert a nail that can be removed. Secure
basement windows with grilles or grates.
Instead of hiding keys around the outside of your home, give an
extra key to a neighbor you trust.
If you travel, create the illusion that you're at home by getting
some timers that will turn lights on and off in different areas of
your house throughout the evening. Lights burning 24 hours a day
signal an empty house.
Vehicle Safety:
Never leave your keys in your car, even briefly
Park in well-lit and high-traffic areas
Keep all valuables out of sight, in the trunk or out of the car
Remove your registration and insurance cards; don't leave in the car
Use an anti-theft device, such as "The Club"
Use an electronic vehicle alarm
Report any vandalism or break-ins to the police
